Wonder if this will take off….

I wonder if services like this will take off.

The trend towards open data and open APIs seems to be reinforcing itself. If demand grows for tools like this, then every webapp developer is either going to have to reinvent the wheel and roll their own flavor of this tool, or develop APIs that are world-facing so the toolmakers can connect up to the existing tools. I enjoy seeing all the new ways of using things that bubble out of this, but it still makes me ask how popular these things might become. Then those second thoughts come up and ask the metaquestion of if popularity is relevant ultimately, as long as the project achieves its goals and advances the state of the arts.

Whee! Thud! Ow!

It’s been a busy few days since the last post on Friday.

Saturday: Unity Games XII, a day long board gaming convention mere minutes from my abode. How could I not go? Got there around 9:45am, finished up around midnight. Took a decent lunch break and a long dinner break. Played six games during the day, all different, and three of them were games I’d never played before. That’s what I really like about Unity Games events, the chance to try new things. At least one game made it to my wantlist. Also got to discover an excellent sczechaun restaurant near me. One of my dinner companions had it recommended to him by a Chinese labmate, and it was an excellent recommendation.

Sunday: A-cappellabowl! My group, None Of The Above, as well as Slapdash Graduate, In The Moment, Lowell Gentleman Songsters, Firedrill!, and Boston Jazz Voices entertained about 150 for a little over two hours. It was a long concert, but all the different groups and the varied styles kept it interesting. It was a benefit for the Framingham Civic League, and we pulled in about $1500 for them, after all expenses were taken care of. It was a good venue, but they weren’t well prepared for us, so I don’t know if we’ll be using it again. Lots of good feedback, and it was nice to hang out with the other groups a bit. Didn’t sell any of the water bottles, but we didn’t really advertise them. Next time.

Monday: Back to work. Did my taxes! Yay refund!

Tuesday: Finally got to play squash again after an almost 2 month hiatus due to holidays and various other things. During the first game I twisted my ankle and fell. Didn’t feel any pain at the time, just the normal little twinge I would expect, played a few more games. Stiffened and swelled up on the drive home, so I was laid up all evening with an ice pack and a bandage wrap, thoughtfully applied by someone with more sense than I.

Today: Swelling is down, but it’s not a good idea to put weight on the ankle, so I’m laid up in bed right now. Got up for some chow, and the foot is doing better. Fingers crossed.
